Carlson Jacob Touché (born September 13, 1998) is a major character on The Savages; he is an original member of the school clique The Savages. Described by Trae as the "baby of the group", although he isn't exactly the youngest, Carl joins the Savages prior to his rebellion towards the school rules.
He is a junior student at James A. Masters High School. In the beginning of the series, Carl proves to be one of the most loyal, reasonable members of The Savages, and he is known for being easily aggressive and the most adventurous member in the clique. Upon a majority of the members, however, he isn't exactly as well-known and often overlooked by the social stratosphere, so his inclusion in the Savages proves to be prominent. A major setback in Carl's character storyline is his family's ambiguously criminal background, particularly his father. Raised with two younger siblings Caiden and Charlotte, Carl ends up discovering vague truths about his father's double life as a family man and a drug dealer, as shown in The Wild Ride. His father's connection to a dangerous drug lord Eli Hawk ends up affecting Carl as he and the Savages cross paths with him during an impromptu trip to Oregon.
Carl's stronger relationships are initially with Alex Herrera and Trae Ventura, whom have a very tight-knit relationship with each other's families and they are equally the most loyal to each other. He has shown true friendship to all of the members of The Savages, including Gina Woods, Lily Blossom, and Zachary Foxx.
He is portrayed by Nick Robinson, and is based on Touchinos.
Biography[]
Carl's surname Touché, claimed to be originated from a French origin, was raised by Eric, a stockbroker, and Karen, a chef, in Seattle. He is the oldest of three, with his younger brother Caiden, and younger sister Charlotte, each born 4 years apart. Not much about Carl's life is revealed until the third season, but more about his father's double life is. Carl has remained in the dark about his father's experience as a drug dealer, believing that he and his family were raised into middle-class wealth.
Personality[]
Carl Touché is a very reasonable, loyal, logical character, but best described by REBELReloaded as the "glue" to The Savages. His presence and devotion to the clique has contributed to the dynamic of the group. In terms of his own individuality, Carl has found himself to be very adventurous and willing to take risks even if it comes with consequences. He also complements Trae with his trait as a hopeless romantic, someone who falls into sexual or romantic relationships very easily. His character development particularly begins when he comes up with the idea to take his father's van and ditch school with The Savages, and he ends up flirting with a college stuent and making brash decisions. In the second season, we see Carl's weaknesses as he's faced against Eli Hawk and his dark agenda.
Storyline[]
Carl is introduced, by Trae as the fifth member and "baby" of The Savages, and is well-known for his rebellion towards a former teacher by busting the windows out of his car. In the beginning of the series, Carl serves as a support system for most of the Savages and agrees to recruiting new members for the clique. When Gina becomes a candidate, he and Trae both team up to help improve her attitude and teaching her how to be aggressive. (The Mafia)
During this time, Carl is known for his closer relationships with Trae and Alex; he is also known for being a hopeless romantic similar to Trae. When Trae rejects Dirty Dan's offers for a relationship, Carl ends up going on a date with him and it goes awry when he backs out of a sexual encounter. When it comes to his friendship with Alex, Carl tries to advise him to behave naturally when Alex becomes obsessive and rather infatuated with Gina who doesn't give in to him. Meanwhile, Carl manages to do some recruiting of his own when he is approached by high school quarterback Rufus King, who wants to join The Savages much to Alex's chagrin. Seemingly open-minded, he finds himself convincing Alex to give Rufus a chance, despite the fact that Rufus replaced Alex as the quarterback. (The Feminist Manifesto)
Carl's role in the clique increases yet becomes jeopardized when he convinces the revamped Savages to ditch school and go on a road trip to Portland, Oregon. Despite uncertainty, he leads the group in his father's van and they eventually get stranded in the middle of nowhere. Carl and Trae, then, discover a stash of money in the back of the van and it leaves questions regarding where it came from and what his father does. During this episode, Carl also meets an older college student Kyle who works and owns a gas station and is dating Carl's old babysitter Alison Montserrat. Kyle and Carl develop a rather interesting bond together when Kyle ends up fixing the van and leading them to Portland, Oregon for a night at a bar. Despite them being underage, Kyle manages to get The Savages in unscathed.
With this, Carl also finds himself attracted to Kyle despite him being a high school student and a minor. As they plan on returning back to Seattle, Carl and The Savages are chased down by Eli Hawk, who Carl's father is working for. (The Wild Ride)
Carl, then, becomes rather distracted by that mystery with the poor treatment of the students after the video scandal investigation. He, alongside Alex and Trae, assume that Joe is a prime suspect, especially with how mysterious he has been in The Savages and with Nate, who quits the clique under Joe's influence. Carl confronts Nate and warns him about Joe's intentions, despite being one to notice Nate's behavioral changes in the clique in general. With that particular loss, he not only plays a role in the premeditated riot gone wrong, he maintains his loyalty to Trae after he is hospitalized. He finds himself in a near-violent confrontation with Felix and The Moneybags when they continue to harass Trae and The Savages, and Carl has his father to come to his defense.
Little does he know that his life would be affected when Carl realizes that Eli Hawk has a close relationship with his father, when he comes to visit their family and makes himself at home. (The School for Scandal, The Psychological Warfare, The Beast Unleashed)
While Trae remains hospitalized after his shooting from the riot, Carl remains in paranoia when Eli maintains his stay at his home, and Carl is forced to be friendly with him, while Eli develops bonds with his mother and his brother Caiden. Throughout, Carl attempts to keep an eye on Eli's every specific move, knowing that there may be evil intentions involved. A lot of these instances begin to affect Carl's energy within The Savages and in school, as he becomes more worried, sad, and terrified. Alex is particularly one of the few members to notice the change. During a night out, Carl opens up to his father about his discomfort around Eli, without mentioning why. (The Alibi)
Meanwhile, after Trae quits The Savages once he returns to an intervention started by Sydney, Carl is one of the few members who convinces Trae to stay. Despite knowing what Trae did in the video scandal, he refutes Sydney's motive to kick him out of the clique because of all he's done for them. Trae's decision to distance himself from The Savages does mroe harm than good for Carl, who tries to hold the group altogether at a time of crisis, while also battling his own issues with Eli. He and Alex, later, both try to convince Sydney to apologize to Trae, but it backfires. Carl is also the first person to notice that Joe is plotting something against The Savages, and knows they need Trae back more than ever. (The Scarlet Letters)
Throughout his support for Trae's newfound relationship with Zachary and knowing the news behind Felix's death, Carl deals with his own crises at home during the holidays. He finally admits to Alex that Eli is basically living with him and his family and begs Alex to stay with his family for Christmas. Although Alex declines, Carl seizes an opportunity once Lily invites The Savages to go mall shopping, and he, Lily, Gina, and Zachary go together. He asks for his parents' permission to go, and Eli ends up giving him $200, but he is taken aback by this notion. Meanwhile, the group gets into mischief, shoplifting items and all getting caught by mall security. A night later, Carl is taken by surprise when Trae arrives at hus house for their annual Christmas tradition. Before Carl could warn him, Trae ends up meeting Eli again. Carl takes advantage of his interactions with Trae now that he's aware of Eli's resurgence and tries to convince him multiple times to help him run a background check on him and take him down. Throughout the process, however, Carl continues to grieve over Trae's refusal to come back to The Savages, further confronting him for being selfish and stubborn. At this point, Carl is the fifth victim within The Savages to receive a scarlet letter, and it exposes Eli's true identity as Scott Deegan, a criminal fugitive who is wanted for child sexual abuse. Carl becomes rather disgusted by this revelation, informs Trae and breaks down and cries about needing him for protection. (The Rose That Grew From Concrete)
Carl and Trae both realize the Savages must come to common ground to figure out the culprit behind the scarlet letters, but when the rise of The Glamouflage distracts Carl and the clique's plans, Carl has yet to reveal his truth about living with Eli to the members. Meanwhile, Carl gets involved in a physical brawl with Rufus and The Glamouflage, particularly without Trae and Sydney's consent and awareness, and he is eventually suspended along with the other members. As a result of getting suspended, Carl's mother Karen punishes him and attempts to keep him away from The Savages, and this further angers him. He finally confronts Eli in his own terms and tells him that he knows about his true identity, but Eli puts Carl in a chokehold and threatens to kill him and his family if his father doesn't give him the $25,000 that he owed him in The Wild Ride, and makes clear he's aware of who Carl was in Oregon that night.
Carl now believes he has put himself in sheer danger after the confrontation and confides in Trae for advice. After Trae considers calling the police, Carl fears doing that would put his father's reputation in danger and he would go to jail with Eli. Carl also eavesdrops on Eli's conversation with Eric that night and knew that something would happen with him and his family, and he'd have to be the one to stop it. However, this plan is delayed when he, along with members of The Savages, are arrested and taken to the police station as suspects in Felix's murder.
